Reported earlier on Alternative Press, the Marvel Ultimate Universe is going to see a massive shakeup following the conclusion to Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley’s five issue mini-series, Cataclysm: Ultimates’ Last Stand which has the Ultimates trying to stave of the Galactus of the 616-Universe. While Bendis is keeping the ending to Cataclysm very close to his vest, it is interesting to note the creative line-ups and the main characters of the three books that will be coming out of Cataclysm:
- Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez, further chronicling the adventures of Miles Morales, the successor to the Ultimate Universe’s Peter Parker and, in this writer’s opinion, one of the best new characters in mainstream comics in the last few years.
- All-New Ultimates by Micahel Fiffe and Amilcar Pina following a team of young superheroes including Morales, Kitty Pryde, Jessica Drew (taking the mantle of Black Widow), Cloak & Dagger, and Bombshell
- Ultimate FF by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Mario Guerva which brings the Future Foundation to the Ultimate Universe focusing on the team of Sue Storm, Tony Stark, Machine Man, and the Falcon.
These changes bring up interesting questions: What of the rest of the X-Men in the Ultimate Universe? What of Captain America and Thor? And what about resident psychopath Reed Richards? (Oh, did I mention Richards has gone insane in the Ultimate Universe? Go read Ultimate Doomsday and Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimates run. You’re welcome.) While the rest of Cataclysm will no doubt bring those answers, I for one cannot wait for these three series. Some have said that perhaps it is time for the Ultimate Universe to truly end, I kind of disagree with it. While I’ve always been on-off with the Ultimate U, one thing I always respected it for was that its changes actually meant something, even in much derided stories like Ultimatum. Come April we will see what changes, for good and ill, will come.
