Interview: The Epicness That is Songhammer

G33K-HQ: What is your earliest geek memory?

ShredHammer: I believe it was a cosplay experience. I was like 4 years old. My mom took me to the supermarket, and there, in the cereal/toy isle, I found a rubber knife. I stripped of my clothes down to the underwear, shoved the knife into the waistband of my Underoos, and began running through the store as Tarzan. I haven’t looked back since… though when I strip down in the supermarket now, they call the cops, so I mostly wear armor now instead.

songhammer6G33K-HQ: What was your first creative outlet?

CroonHammer: Singing and dancing to Allen Sherman records for my grandfather when I was 3. Allen Sherman was musical comedy and apparently it set a tone for what was to come later. Not that Songhammer is funny or anything it’s just… well ya, we’re funny.

G33K-HQ: First guitar hero?

Shred: Oooooh, that’s a tough one. I’m going to say it’s a tossup between Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) and Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath). Other guitar demigods that we worship at the alter of would be Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Pablo Picasso, Bret & Jermaine, The Smothers Brothers, Floyd Pepper, you know, THE GREATS!

G33K-HQ: What is the coolest Halloween costume you wore?

Croon: Michael Jackson. My grandfather bought me the real Thriller jacket and single white glove and my grandma curled my hair. I was 8. My best friend was Michael too but he had the Beat it jacket. We even took Michael Jackson dancing classes. I can moonwalk!!

G33K-HQ: Describe your studio to us? What helps you work?songhammer5

Shred: Our studio is called the Super Secret Sanctum. It’s also been know as Songhammer’s Forge, The Hit Factory, The Demigod’s Sonic Palace, but mostly it’s called the office in the back of my house. All the tracking is done on an iMac computer using GarageBand software. We do all the recording at home and then take the roughs to Ron Steve Craviotto over at Love Juice Labs recording facility in Riverside, CA for mixing and mastering. And the results, as you’ve experienced, are mind blowing!!!! Sorry about getting all that mind blown everywhere, but it’s just that good.

Shred: What really helps us work is a peaceful work environment. We like to start by mopping a couple orcs, pushing around a dragon or two, do some Kung Fu exercises, do a little hammer and sword training and we finish it up with a cool down of smooth-jazz and speed-metal.

G33K-HQ: Who are your biggest music inspirations?

Croon: Elton John, Metallica, Billy Joel, Leonard Cohen and Bach. We consult with all of them prior to writing any new Songhammer material. Elton says hello.

songhammer7G33K-HQ: Ever been hit with inspiration in the middle of reading or playing a game and had to drop what you’re doing to write?

Shred: Absolutely! A good chunk of the lyrics for the BlizzCon winning song “We Are The Horde” was written while reading the book ‘Lord of the Clans’ by Christie Golden. The song is more about Orgrim Doomhammer and the Hellscreams than Thrall, but the inspiration was there. Other books, games, and movies have done the same. Sometimes we just have to put the TV on pause and start writing an epic masterpiece… It happens all the time.

G33K-HQ: Best and worst games you’ve played in the last year?

Croon: Hmm…I got locked into a game of tic tac toe with an orc that lasted 6 days. I had to kill him and his cat to win. That sucked!! Best game has to be Diablo 3:Reaper of Souls expansion, though Heroes of the Storm is pretty dope. We are alpha testing it for Blizzard now. Songhammer would’nt be Songhammer without games!!!

G33K-HQ: Do you consider yourself “geeks”? What does the word “geek” mean to you?

Shred: According to Webster’s dictionary a geek is “A person who is socially awkward and unpopular: a usually intelligent person who does not fit in with other people.” Well let me tell you something mister, Songhammer is not a bunch of geeks. Just because we may have some college degrees, play video games all the time, wear custom-built armor, everywhere, and can tell you the difference between the Valar and the Maiar in Tolkien’s mythology of the Silmarillion doesn’t make us geeks… wait a sec… Okay, ya we are geeks. My bad! But we totally rock… GEEK ROCK!!!!!!!!!songhammer1

G33K-HQ: Happiest convention moment ever?

Croon: Playing to 20,000 live and 800,000 virtual fans and fellow geeks in 150 countries when we won the Blizzcon 2013 talent contest. The energy in the room was incredible. It was a nerd dream come true. We will be back this year with a vengeance. We have some really exciting stuff planned for Blizzcon 2014.

G33K-HQ: What genre brings out the best in your art?

Shred: Well, you know, fantasy like Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Potter, The Dresden Files, with some Si-Fi like Frank Herbert’s Dune, Star Wars (the old cool ones), Star Trek. Some new stuff like Hunger Games, Divergent, video games like World of Warcraft, Diablo, Call of Duty, the Smurf Adventure, Galaga, and pretty much comic books. Lots of comic books!!! If you’re talkin’ about music, well then, it’s all about classic rock, metal, and disco! What else is there?

G33K-HQ: Living or dead, who would you guys like to jam with?

Croon: Meatloaf, Pink Floyd, and Pantera… in that order.

G33K-HQ: Stuck on a deserted island, you can bring ONE artist’s entire library to keep yourself occupied…what would it be?

songhammer9Croon: The entire gaming library of Blizzard Entertainment. Think of how awesome my World of Warcraft gear would be if there were no distractions from the outside world. No girls, no bills, no taxman… would be freaking epic!!!

G33K-HQ: When and where can your fellow geeks see you perform next?

Shred: Our next show in Southern California will be at a new event called Club Cosplay in Corona, CA on Saturday June 28th. It’s going to be a freaking EPIC night, with two levels of Cosplay costume competitions, some awesome geek DJs spinning tunes, and of course the overwhelming overlords of all that is sonically unstoppable: SONGHAMMER!!!! We’ll be rocking the house, melting faces, and blowing minds. You have got to be there. We’ll even sign a chunk of CroonHammer’s left pinky, just for you. Tickets are available at

G33k-HQ would like to thank SONGHAMMER for taking the time to speak with us, we look forward to seeing more from them.  FOR THE HORDE!
