Desolation of Smaug Review

Review by Scampos:

hobbit-2For the second installation of the Hobbit to come out on video. The anticipation for this movie was high. With that said, the stakes were high. Peter Jackson, the writing crew and so on had their work cut out for them. They had an audience that is a fan of the movies that were made thus far, fans who have not seen any of the movies but love the books (believe it or not, those fans exist) and a majority of fans who love both.

Hobbit-1No matter what is said about this movie, there is a lot of expectations for it. So, clearly if one watches this movie, it cannot be watched with an open mind. It has to be watched expecting a certain level of skill in its execution.

In that regard, Desolation of Smaug was all that could be asked for and more. In this film, it features every character prominently enough to where the old are not forgotten while introducing new characters who not only hold their own with old characters but have their own mark that is memorable.

The story is not straight out of the story book but its adaptation is its own. It hold true a lot, so any book lover could just enjoy it as a book adaptation while still seeing it for what it is: a movie.

It was beautifully done. As opposed to the first Hobbit movie, this one seemed to focus more on Thorin and his right to be king and all of the possible ramifications of him being King Under the Mountain! Ideas that were once preconceived are shattered. Alliances are tested, friendships falter, love flourishes and a tale is woven.

Bilbo’s adventure seems to branch of in places that I did not see them going. But Jackson took it there beautifully. Fight scenes were just spectacular, story and character changes – not necessarily growth – were well done and the timing of characters, dialogue and so forth were just excellent. This movie, more than any other, is the g33k movie of 2013, I don’t care what anyone says. It had it’s faults, even being the second out of a trilogy set, this movie was challenged to bring it and it brought it hard. Expect the unexpected, beware Smaug, and be ready for the Return of the King Under the Mountain and you’re ready for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

1471160_10152113295456926_684884681_n Danny DeLuna and I went to see the midnight screening of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug at the AMC theaters last night. We arrived a little before 10:30 and the hold out lines were being let in right as we exchanged our online codes for real tickets. I was a little worried that we would get crappy seats, but we made it in just in time to still get good seats. I love the buzz of the midnight shows, usually full of the people who are REALLY excited to see the given movie. We had over an hour and a half to kill so I cut out to run across the street for Pearl Tea while Danny hung out and grabbed pictures of the people who showed up in costume.

1503509_10152113295116926_435146503_n There were several dwarves, some elves, human warriors, a wizard, and this one guy dressed as the Elf King, King Thranduil…holy crap that is Lee Pace the guy who will be playing Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy… he looked awesome! There were the requisite people passing the time with their Nintendo handhelds, people surfing FB on their mobile phones, and just general chit chat. When the theater darkened for trailers there was a big cheer. We got to see trailers for Captain America (f&#k yeah!) and the new Wachowski movie Jupiter Ascending, which looks interesting if a little overdone. I have to say I enjoyed this entry in the Hobbit trilogy MUCH more than the first. I liked the first one, I just didn’t love it. This is a spoiler free review so you’ll just have to take my word that is was much more action packed than the first one! There was of course the obligatory Empire Strikes Back fade to black, leave you hanging ending, but that is what you expect when they stretched these out into three films. As we were walking out I saw the Elf King again and said, “you were kind of a dick in this movie” to which he replied, “I know! Maybe I should have picked another costume.” I told he he looked great and he should get to redeem himself in the next one 😉
