“Critical Role,” the web show starring popular voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons, may have started as a home game among friends, but has become a part of the D&D canon. After the world of Exandria was first brought in to the official Dungeons & Dragons multiverse in “Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount,” Wizards of the Coast has announced a new campaign book set in that world.
The new adventure, titled “Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep,” is an adventure that will take characters from levels 3-12 and will explore Exandria, starting in the Wastes of Xhorhas, traveling to the continent of Marquet, and eventually leading to a mysterious realm called the Netherdeep.
The announcement describes the adventure as:
“The greed of mortals has awakened a powerful entity long thought destroyed. For eons, this mighty champion of the gods has been imprisoned in the darkest depths of Exandria. His name has been forgotten, as have his heroic deeds. Languishing in despair, he calls out for new heroes to save him.
Inspired by the campaigns of the hit series Critical Role, this adventure begins in the Wastes of Xhorhas and leads to the glimmering oasis-city of Ank’Harel on the continent of Marquet, and from there into a sunken realm of gloom, corruption, and sorrow known as the Netherdeep. Above it all, the red moon of Ruidus watches, twisting the fates of those who have the power to shape the course of history.
Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep contains seven chapters of thrilling adventure, new creatures and magic items, and a poster map of Ank’Harel.”
Players and DMs can also expect new art, lore, magic items, creatures, and NPCs.
What’s most notable is that this is the first full-length campaign book released by Wizards of the Coast not set in the Forgotten Realms. While other D&D setting books have been released, often including their own short adventures, this is a full-length campaign, complete with new items, monsters, and a lengthy story to complete.
With new settings on the horizon, fans are feeling optimistic that we’ll see more campaign books set outside the Forgotten Realms, whether it’s in Eberron, Ravenloft, one of the “Magic: The Gathering” worlds, or in an upcoming setting being brought back for 5th edition.
Players of D&D Adventurers League will also be excited to hear that there are plans to work this book into organized play, along with the “Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount” book. Whether that will be as part of the main AL campaign or as a side campaign (similar to the Eberron: Oracle of War and Ravenloft Mist Hunters) campaign will be revealed in due time.
“Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep” will be available on March 15, 2022, at your friendly local game store.
