It looks like we’re getting another reboot from The CW! This time around it’s the classic sci-fi series ‘Babylon 5’ that was set in a space station against a tense political backdrop of a looming war between two bitter enemy races.
It was reported by Variety that Warner Bros. has ordered this new series to be produced and written by J. Michael Straczynski creator of the original show. And yes, this will be a total reboot “from the ground up” and NOT a continuation of the original 1993 franchise that ran for five seasons with seven made-for-TV movies.
Here’s a full description of the new show that Warner Bros. provided to The Verge;
“In a from-the-ground-up reboot of the original series, John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.”
That’s pretty much the same premise of the original series. Now as a big fan of the original show, I can’t help having somewhat mixed feelings.
While it’s great that we’re getting another round of ‘Babylon 5’, especially now with how far SFX has grown…this will be a complete and total reboot.
Now with that said…this could be interesting as this reboot can either breathe new life to the franchise like with ‘Battlestar Galactica’ or end up like ‘Flash Gordon: A Modern Space Opera’.
What do you think? What do you want to see in a rebooted ‘Babylon 5’? Let us know!
