During MagicCon Las Vegas, Wizards of the Coast revealed the 2025 lineup for Magic: The Gathering. This includes seven main expansions, featuring remastered card sets, a return to a popular plane, and previously-announced Universes Beyond sets.
Also: Spongebob Squarepants.
Classic Planes Return
The first set of 2025 takes players back to the haunted plane of Innistrad, home of vampires, werewolves, and other things that go bump in the night. Innistrad: Remastered reprints cards from seven Innistrad sets from across Magic’s history, including “headliner” cards – featuring multiple artworks, treatments, and serialized versions.
In April, Magic returns to Tarkir, a war-torn plane ruled by five clans where dragons are born from elemental storms. While little is currently know about the new set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, some well-known characters are set to return, including Sarkhan and Ugin.
New Worlds
Magic will also be expanding its setting with sets that explore new territories for the franchise.
First, in February, Aetherdrift takes the story through a death race, where competitors from across multiple planes compete for a trophy called the “Aether Spark.” This set appears to heavily feature vehicles and artifacts, and will likely have players referencing everything from “Mad Max” to “Speed Racer” as they play.
Then, in early August, Magic takes a space-fantasy turn with Edge of Eternities. This set explores an area outside the regular multiverse, going from single worlds to an entire spacescape called the Solthera system. It also boasts the return of iconic villain Tezzeret, as shown in the promo artwork.
Universes Beyond
Magic: The Gathering has been expanding beyond its own setting with crossover sets and expansions in what they call “Universes Beyond.” What began with a Walking Dead Secret Lair has grown far beyond that, with entire sets for franchises such as Doctor Who, Warhammer 40:000, and Assassin’s Creed.
The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set was previously announced, but we’re now receiving more information on the set. It’s due to be released June 13, featuring characters, monsters, and locations from across all 16 mainline Final Fantasy Games.
Wizards also released a new video, providing a sneak peek at the set to come:
Additionally, Wizards revealed more information on the Magic/Marvel crossover.
Earlier this month, Magic announced five Secret Lair drops featuring new cards for Marvel heroes Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Wolverine, and Storm, as well as reprints of old cards with art themed around the heroes.
Now we have word that Spider-Man will receive a full expansion set, along with hints of another Secret Lair. No further details were revealed, so when specifically this releases and what the set will consist of remains unknown.
Finally, Wizards of the Coast announced a Spongebob Squarepants Secret Lair drop, set to be released some time in 2025. Nothing else is known about the set, but for many, just the words “Spongebob Squarepants Secret Lair” is enough to make them either excited or upset.
Whether you’re ready to return to classic planes, explore worlds unknown, or just enjoy Universes Beyond, 2025 looks to be another eventful year for Magic: The Gathering. Let’s just hope there’s enough Secret Lairs in stock and at affordable prices for everyone to get the cards they want.
