As summer nears its end and fall approaches, corgis and dog aficionados gather for a day dedicated to dogs: Corgi Con. What began as a gathering of corgi owners on the beach has grown into a convention (held in the Alameda County Fairgrounds) filled with dogs and vendors alike.
2024 celebrated ten years of Corgi Con with the theme “Camp Corgi,” bringing thousands of dogs (and their owners) to the event. The event ran from 10 to 5, with special events spread throughout the day, including corgi racing, the “corgi ninja warrior” obstacle course, and of course, a corgi costume contest.
Yes, there were plenty of corgis in costume, including cosplay classics like Disney and Marvel characters, plenty of hot dogs, and at least one Bob Ross. Owners who wanted to show off their corgis’ costumes could have them strut their stuff in the costume contest, where winners were chosen by audience applause.
While the convention was corgi-centric, other dogs were absolutely welcome, so there were dogs ranging from tiny pomeranians to terriers to Alaskan malamutes. The grassy venue gave them plenty of space to run around, while attendees could relax in the shade and pet the dogs in attendance.
As Corgi Con has reached full convention status, it’s no surprise that there were plenty of vendors there as well. There were multiple booths around the fairground area, selling good for both dogs and humans alike. Attendees could buy a new hat and t-shirt for themselves, get new treats and toys for their dogs, and purchase gear like dog-carrying backpacks and dog accessories. Attendees could also buy lunch from food trucks, which offered a decent variety of options, as well as snacks and desserts.
All in all, Corgi Con provided an entertaining day filled with very good dogs, which is exactly what attendees expected. Whether they were there to give their corgis a chance to socialize, compete in corgi races and obstacle courses, or just to pet a bunch of dogs, Corgi Con proved to be a good way to spend a sunny day.
