Magic: The Gathering Reveals Final Fantasy Cards

Magic: The Gathering first announced its Universes Beyond: Final Fantasy set some time ago, leaving players to wonder what cards and decks we’d be seeing. Now, previews have started rolling out, and we can see what cards and characters await.

The Final Fantasy set is designed to include characters, creatures, and powers from across the Final Fantasy series of games, with every game seeing some inclusion. We can see this in previews of cards like Garland/Chaos from the first Final Fantasy game, Cecil from Final Fantasy 4, and Sin from Final Fantasy X.

However, players looking for specific games can find them in Commander preconstructed decks. There are four Commander decks announced, featuring characters from Final Fantasy VI, VII, X, and XIV, and retailing at around $70 – a higher than average price for Commander decks, which typically retail around $50 (give or take). These decks will also be available as more expensive holo-foil Collector’s Editions.

Players can also buy a Starter Kit, featuring starter decks for Cloud Strife and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, bundles with 9 play boosters, and both Play and Collector booster boxes. The Starter Kit will retail for around $20, while the boxes and bundles are costing significantly more than their non-Final Fantasy counterparts, a price increase that has caused some concern and frustration online.

In addition to regular bordered cards, the Final Fantasy set will include Borderless Woodblock cards, and older Magic: The Gathering cards reskinned with Final Fantasy art from famed artists like Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura. (Longtime players and collectors know that the latter will almost certainly become ridiculously expensive on the secondary market.)

Wizards of the Coast also announced there will be three Final Fantasy-themed Secret Lair drops coming out alongside the set, but no details have been given there yet.

Other Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy cards revealed include characters or creatures like the iconic Tonberry, a Jumbo Cactuar, and Emet-Selch. There will also be Sidequest cards, cards that transform when you meet certain conditions, sagas that reflect the power of summons, and more.

While the Magic/Final Fantasy sets and decks are not out in stores yet, preorders already selling out fast online. Players are recommended to place preorders at their friendly local game stores soon to get their hands on these cards.
