Magic: The Gathering has been going all-in on its crossover sets lately. The Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set continues to sell out at incredible speeds, even at inflated prices, and fans barely have time to sort their binders before the Avatar: The Last Airbender set drops in November. Before that, though, a new Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair set is on its way.
Secret Lair
Magic’s Secret Lair series are limited-time drops available only on the Secret Lair website. These often feature artwork from guest artists, but in 2020, Secret Lair sold a “Universes Beyond” set that introduced mechanically unique cards featuring characters from “The Walking Dead.” Since then, Secret Lair sets have occasionally included crossovers for everything from Dungeons & Dragons to Fortnite to Spongebob Squarepants.
While Secret Lair drops were once sold as “print on demand,” allowing anyone to order a set within the time frame, the business model switched to a limited supply run, making the in-demand sets much harder to obtain.
Secret Lair drops including crossovers with Monty Python or Hatsune Miku sell out quickly, with the Marvel and Final Fantasy Secret Lairs left potential customers waiting in virtual queues for hours and unable to get the product. This has lead to frustrated players who were denied the chance to buy the sets they were excited about, while scalpers still got through to buy up the stock and resell at marked up prices.
Now it’s Sonic’s turn, and the new cards will undoubtedly be going fast.
Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair

The Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair will consist of three sets:
- Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes
- Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear
- Secret Lair x Sonic: Chasing Adventure
The “Friends & Foes” set features seven new cards based on Sonic, his allies, and Dr. Eggman, while the Turbo Gear and Chasing Adventure sets feature existing cards reskinned with Sonic the Hedgehog names and art. The cards will all be legal for Commander, Legacy, and Vintage.
While many Secret Lair sets sell out quickly (and these almost certainly will too), Magic promises that WPN game stores will receive non-foil sets that they can sell starting in August, so supply will be a little less thin.

The Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair drops on July 14. The Friends & Foes set will sell for $39.99 in non-foil or $49.99 for rainbow foil, while the other sets will sell for $29.99 for non-foil, or $39.99 for foil. You can see the full contents of the set on the Secret Lair website.
