Dungeons & Dragons Coming to Virtual Reality

Tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons provide players with a world of infinite possibility, limited only by their imagination. At the same time, the success of games like “Baldur’s Gate 3” has shown that there is still a demand for video games set in the worlds of D&D, and now Dungeons & Dragons is taking the next step and bringing the Forgotten Realms to virtual reality.

Wizards of the Coast and Resolution Games have announced a partnership to create a new Dungeons & Dragons VR game. While this was only just announced, so details have not been disclosed, Resolution Games has already demonstrated its ability to bring tabletop tactics and dungeon delving into VR with their game Demeo.

According to Tommy Palm, founder and CEO of Resolution Games: “As anyone who’s played Demeo can guess, we’re incredibly huge fans of tabletop roleplaying games. They have an unparalleled power to bring people together to create shared experiences, and that’s something we’ve tried to capture, too, with nearly every release in our library. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS offers one of the richest fantasy worlds that has ever been created, and it only gets bigger with every new sourcebook and adventure. We’re beyond humbled to have the opportunity to work with such an incredible IP and look forward to sharing the first details of this new project in the future.”

Tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons have found a home on virtual tabletops like Roll20, although they still require friends to connect and play together. Wizards of the Coast has been working on its own virtual tabletop as well, although it’s not yet commercially available. Of course, D&D also has its own fair share of video games, including the “Baldur’s Gate” series, “Dungeons & Dragons Online,” and “Neverwinter,” although this will be its first foray into virtual reality.

Whether this new game takes the form of a virtual reality tabletop game, a single-player experience, or a multi-player VR game under the control of a pre-programmed Dungeon Master remains to be seen, so keep an eye on G33k-HQ for more information as it comes.
